With over 17 years of experience in education, these are just a few of the trainings and conferences I have attended for over 100 hours of professional development:
When I considered a return to the classroom in 2013, I knew that Whitehouse was the district into which I wanted to invest my time and energy, the school from which I wanted my children to graduate, and the community of which I wanted to be a part. From the quality of the students to the suport of the parents to the cameraderie of the colleagues, I have not been disappointed: Whitehoue IS the standard of excellence. I currently teach freshmen students English I and English I Honors, and I coach UIL Academics in Prose and Poetry Interpretation.
The maroon-and-white classroom, however, has not been my only work experience. Chapel Hill ISD provided an opportunity to learn to love teaching, and Pine Tree ISD enriched that. When my first child was born, I took the opportunity to focus on my home and family and a great passion my husband and I shared: Potter’s Cast. He and I produced, directed, wrote for, and performed in this traveling theatre troupe for over 20 years. I also worked from home as the manager of his consulting company with nationwide audiology clinics while also homeschooling my children until his passing in 2013.
From these experiences, I bring not only an academic understanding of the usefulness of competency in langauge skills but also a real world perspective of the powerful role such competency plays in personal and professional success. When a student asks me, “Why do we need to know about (this English stuff),” with confidence, I can give them a real answer: “Power. When you lack the skills to read, speak, listen to, and understand something, you are relying on someone else to do that for you. You are relinquishing your power to do that for yourself. You are, in fact, giving them power over you. Do you feel you can trust the majority of the people you will encounter in life, for the rest of your life, with that kind of power? What I’m about to teach you takes far less effort.”
